Impact 2022

2022 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

Covering the period from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022

Dear Friends,

The past year has been tough. In Louisville, despite some early progress, we have not moved forward from the protests for racial justice in 2020 with anything approximating a plan for change. Perhaps that will come with new city leadership. But so far, the city has failed Black residents, to whom leaders promised equity and equality.

Meanwhile, the pandemic lingers. The economy teeters. We have experienced the trauma of mass shooting after mass shooting.

Where do you find hope?

I find it in my community — family, friends, neighbors. Places, spaces, art and music. Storytelling. Sidewalks and roads. From the people and things that make up our neighborhoods, here and across the river. And in the work LPM does every day.

During the past year, LPM has reported the news with rigor and depth like never before. We completed our newsroom expansion, adding coverage in some areas and deepening it in others. We’ve launched investigations that have changed laws and lives.

We have also taken our podcasting to an unprecedented level, creating new communities around the format and working with new creators to lift up voices and perspectives that have been marginalized by media in the past.

Through our music stations, we’ve leaned into our community, celebrating the 20th anniversary of WFPK Waterfront Wednesday and continuing to invest in mental health awareness on-air and online. We’ve launched new seasons of our innovative event series New Lens, our podcast The Music Box, and our web series Behind the Playlist.

All the while, we’ve kept community — our diverse, changing community — at the center of our work. Because that’s what inspires hope. And it’s how we’re doing our part to make our community more equitable.

This community makes LPM possible. And that gives me hope, too.

OUR IMPACT

“How much do I love LPM? Let me count the ways. Never mind, there’s too many to count. And not enough room to type.”

—Randy Cook

LPM Celebrates 10 Years of the Sustainer Program

This year we celebrated ten years of the Sustainer program. What started as a small group of monthly donors has become a solid foundation of our membership programs. Now, more than 65% of our members are Sustaining Members providing support we can count on, month after month. It’s an amazing alliance, and we can’t thank you enough!

Dig Season 2

Louisville once made ambitious promises to transform its police department and mend its relationship with the Black community. Five years later, Louisville police killed Breonna Taylor in her home, kicking off a protest movement unlike anything the city had seen in decades. A joint, yearlong KyCIR/Newsy investigation took a closer look at how Louisville went from a national leader in policing to an epicenter of the movement for racial justice in the U.S – revealing the systemic barriers and choices made by city and LMPD leaders that led to their failure to meaningfully make change. The second season of Dig was awarded a Peabody nomination and an IRE Award.

WFPL 2022 Primary Election Guide

With several closely watched races in local and statewide primaries, WFPL compiled an extensive voting guide, including mayoral, Metro Council, congressional, circuit court and district court races. Interviews, questionnaires and forums were an invaluable resource for voters to make informed decisions and stay abreast of election results.

The Podcast Hatchery

The Podcast Hatchery, a new monthly podcast advice newsletter, hatched in April 2022. For anyone with a podcast or dreams of making one, Laura Ellis – our in-house podcast genius – shares her professional experience in podcasting, gives a peek behind the scenes at LPM Podcasts and helps readers think about podcasting in a different way. You can read previous editions and subscribe here.

Her Music, Her Story

WUOL celebrated International Women’s Day with a special two-hour program dedicated to women in classical music. Created and produced by WUOL Music Director Colleen Phelps, Her Music, Her Story features women at the top of their field paying tribute to the women who have inspired them. Luminaries like multiple Grammy Award winner JoAnn Falletta and The Marvels composer Laura Karpman and more introduce music by composers like Florence Price, Clara Schumann, as well as performances from Isatah Kanneh-Mason, Marian Anderson, and even Ella Fitzgerald. Colleen also curated a playlist featuring the music by women in our WUOL library that you can listen to here.

Reporting After a Tornado Crisis

Devastating tornadoes swept through western Kentucky in December 2021. WFPL’s newsroom responded quickly with by-the-moment and thoughtful coverage, providing much-needed resources to victims and up-to-date information on its continuing impact on the state. WFPL, KyCIR and partner stations in the Kentucky Public Radio Network came together in support of our community to provide comprehensive coverage that continues today.

WFPK Waterfront Wednesday 20th Season

WFPK Waterfront Wednesday returned for its 20th season in April 2022 – the first full season since COVID forced cancellations in 2020 and 2021. These free concerts have become a signature community event, drawing thousands to Waterfront Park and helping Louisville secure an international award as a top city for festivals. The 20th season lineup included Nappy Roots, Maggie Rose, War and Louisville native Joan Osborne.

Louisville Jails and Prisoner Phone Calls

As the pandemic shut down visitation across the state, incarcerated people and their loved ones relied on the prison system’s costly phone calls and emails. When KyCIR’s investigation revealed how much Kentucky Department of Corrections and Securus Technologies were making from these phone calls, the Metro Council passed a budget requiring Louisville Metro Corrections to stop taking commissions and provide a plan for changes.

Where Y’all Really From?

What’s the one universal question Asian Americans are asked at least once (but more like a million times) in their lives? “Where are you really from?” In September 2022, we launched our first “incubaby” from our new Podcast Incubator. The Where Y’all Really From podcast focuses on the tens of thousands of folks whose answer is, “Kentucky!” Hosts Charlene Buckles & Dan Wu chat with and share the diverse stories and perspectives of Asian American and Pacific Islanders living, learning and loving in the bluegrass state.

A Critical Moment

When it comes to teaching about race and history, American classrooms are at a crossroads. In Germany, students are required to learn about one of their nation’s darkest chapters — the Holocaust. WFPL created the radio documentary, A Critical Moment, with Arts and Culture Reporter Stephanie Wolf exploring how the Holocaust is covered in German schools, and Education and Learning Reporter Jess Clark looking at how race is covered in Kentucky classrooms. The result is an unflinching look at how two countries teach about their difficult histories, and why. Kentucky educators and students continued the conversation at an April event in partnership with the Trager Family Jewish Community Center.

New Lens

WUOL continued its partnership with 21c Museum Hotel to present New Lens – a concert series exploring diverse and intriguing sounds and ideas in new music, art and society. This new season of four free concerts launched in April 2022 with a poignant and moving concert of reflection on the violence systemic racism perpetuates against Black people.

Brett Hankison Trial Coverage

Former Louisville Metro Police Department officer Brett Hankison stood trial in late February for his involvement in the high-profile, deadly raid on Breonna Taylor’s apartment in March 2020. WFPL provided thoughtful and timely coverage and context to one of the most closely followed news moments of the last two years.

Behind The Playlist

Every great piece of music —new and old — comes with a story. In a new video series from WUOL Music Director Colleen Phelps, Behind The Playlist is a behind-the-scenes look at the contemporary artists you hear every day on WUOL and the stories they have to tell. Featured composers included those behind television’s Only Murders in the Building and Bluey.

Help for Louisville’s First Wave Of Utility Shut-Offs

In July 2021, Louisville Gas and Electric and Louisville Water company resumed service shut-offs following the expiration of COVID moratorium that suspended disconnections and offered payment plans to customers. WFPL’s reporting on the impact to Louisville residents resulted in the Mayor’s office announcing $5 million of assistance for people facing utility and water shut-offs.

Holiday Music Trivia Night

WUOL’s Colleen Phelps and WFPK’s Stacy Owen joined musical forces for one epic night of trivia with a holiday music theme. Deep trivia cuts — from classical to pop — and the best ugly sweaters were on display for a fun night of community and friendly competition at Gravely Brewing.

Kentucky State Police Accountability Reporting

In August 2021, a KyCIR collaboration with The Marshall Project and The New York Times took a deep dive into the lack of accountability in Kentucky State Police shootings in rural areas. Their reporting in ‘Shooting First And Asking Questions Later’ revealed that although the rate of rural police shootings was lower than in urban areas, when adjusted for population, the rural incidents mirror many of the dynamics of police shootings in cities. But, like most other police shootings across the country, those in rural settings seldom lead to indictments or prosecutions of the officers involved, the data show.

WFPK Mental Health Days

WFPK continued to nurture our community health with monthly #WFPKMentalHealthDays — full days of songs by-request to lift our spirits, give us hope and help us cope. Mental Health Days share valuable online resources and support options for those who need them. In October, WFPK partnered with local organizations and subject matter experts to spotlight social determinants of health and the pandemic’s impact on mental health.

Newsroom Expansion Campaign Completed

The WFPL and KyCIR newsrooms are now 29-strong. We also expanded our development department and hired a VP of Content. This work helps ensure we have the resources to provide equitable access to news and information our community needs.

Google News Initiative's North American Challenge

Louisville Public Media was one of 25 organizations selected in Google’s 2021 North American Innovation Challenge. LPM received support for a research project that seeks to better understand local media connection and disenfranchisement in Louisville’s West End. “Through intentional outreach and relationship-building, we can — and should — include communities and individuals who have been marginalized by the local media ecosystem, enabling us to better serve our community and our audience to better understand their neighbors.” The project marks another milestone toward LPM’s strategic goals to better include, reflect and serve our community.

Words For The People

In April 2022, LPM launched our newest podcast Words For The People, created and hosted by Kentucky Poet Laureate Crystal Wilkinson. Each episode features interviews with two Kentucky writers — one established, and one emerging — woven together with writings submitted by LPM’s community of listeners. Words For The People unlocks the meaningful stories that everyone has inside of them to, as Wilkinson says, “free the words that matter.”

Juneteenth Specials

In the musical short Juneteenth Jubilee, The Music Box celebrated Juneteenth by exploring liberation through music – looking at the lives of three different Black composers from three different time periods while covering the history of the Juneteenth holiday. Race Unwrapped began their season-long exploration of language by “unwrapping” what Juneteenth means, and what it doesn’t. Why it’s complicated, but it isn’t.

Mayoral Forums

WFPL hosted two mayoral forums in a lead up to primary elections in May: one on business and economic development in partnership with Louisville Independent Business Alliance and one on housing in partnership with the Coalition for the Homeless. Through these community partnerships, WFPL provided a platform for voters to connect directly to candidates ahead of these highly-contested races.

Louisville Jail Crisis Timeline

Since November 2021, at least seven inmates have died while incarcerated and there have been multiple mass overdose incidents. In March 2022, the Louisville Metro’s Department of Corrections, responsible for more than 1,000 incarcerated people, became the subject of multiple investigations and a change in leadership. WFPL covered the crisis and how elected leaders and criminal justice reform advocates responded to it through a timeline of the unfolding situation. KyCIR was also on the story, uncovering a lack of mental health resources and compounding staffing and resource concerns from the jail and jail staff union.

Paws Report

WFPK shines a spotlight on more than just musicians. The Paws Report, a weekly series featuring an adoptable pet, has been a popular and rewarding partnership with the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) that has resulted in hundreds of animal adoptions. Even during the pandemic, we continued highlighting pets in need of loving homes and built awareness for the work KHS does in our community.

AWARDS

“I love the music on WFPK, especially Mental Health Wednesdays and the countdowns. Objective and comprehensive reporting on WFPL keeps me informed, so I can come to my own conclusions about what I’ve heard.”
